Our world, so full of promise and conflict, is rooted in a past that is recent. Democratic states are only a few hundred years old. Major religions, source of much turmoil, were founded in the last few thousand years. But the caves of Altamira and Lascaux are covered with extraordinary drawings that date from 30,000 years ago. The origins of self expression come from ages even further back.

Variations on ancient glyphs interweave in my work from a present perspective. Engagement with deep history expands the spirit. Most of the earliest art was intrinsically ephemeral. For me working with transience, water on rock is a source of inspiration. (And on occasion in the street, water on spray paintings) Robert Janz
